Camping
Start at a drive-in site, and sleeping well is what decides the trip
For a first trip choose a site you can drive into: nothing gets carried and a bad night costs little. What decides the experience is not the tent but sleep, and a thick enough pad does more for it than an expensive bag, because the ground pulls heat all night. Popular sites book out in season, and renting gear first is normal.
First stepBook one night at a drive-in campground, rent a tent, bring a thick sleeping pad, and count it a success if you sleep through till morning.
