Coin Collecting

Cleaning one destroys its value: original surface beats shiny

The single most important rule is counter-intuitive: never clean them. Polishing an old coin leaves microscopic scratches and takes most of its value with it, while original toning counts in its favour. Start from circulation finds, sorting dates and mint marks for nothing. Buying seriously means learning grading first.

First stepGo through a jar of loose change or a bank roll, look for the earliest date and any unusual mint marks, and keep your best find in a holder without polishing it.
