Mineral & Fossil Collecting

Hammering your own and buying specimens are two different games

Both routes work: hammer your own from streambeds and quarries, which costs nothing but depends on luck and local rules, or buy specimens from shows and dealers and collect precisely what you want. Either way, record the locality, because a specimen without provenance has almost no scientific value left.

First stepFind a riverbed or quarry near you where collecting is allowed, spend an afternoon there, and label every specimen with where it came from.
