Houseplants
Far more of them die from too much water than too little
The counter-intuitive part is the cause of death: most houseplants are drowned rather than dried out, roots sitting in wet soil rot, and rot looks like thirst, so people water more. Push a finger two centimetres into the soil and only water when it is dry. Light decides what is possible, so a north-facing room rules some out.
First stepChoose one forgiving plant that suits your window's light, water only when the top two centimetres are dry, and keep it alive for three months.
