Hang what you need to remember along a route you already know
It costs nothing and the method is not complicated: take a route you know well enough to walk with your eyes shut, put each item at a fixed point along it, then walk the route to recall them. Twenty random words on a first attempt is normal, and that immediate payoff is why it is easy to start.
