Astrophotography

Stack long exposures until a nebula appears that no eye could see

What separates it from looking through the eyepiece is the output: you want a photograph rather than a live view, which is how nebula colours no eye can register end up on screen. The cost is a longer chain — a tracking mount, hundreds of frames, hours of stacking. Almost none of this gear carries over to ordinary photography.

First stepPut a camera on a tripod at a dark site, take twenty short exposures of the Milky Way, and stack them into one image with free software.
