Microscopy

One drop of pond water contains an entire ecosystem

A second-hand student microscope is plenty; there is no need to buy new. For a first slide, a drop of pond water usually holds a dozen things moving, and that one look tends to decide whether you continue. The skill to practise is preparation — cutting thin, getting the cover slip down without bubbles — which is harder than focusing.

First stepBuy a secondhand student microscope, make a slide from a drop of pond water, and count at least five different things moving.
