Bass Guitar

Four strings, one note at a time, and the whole song stands on you

The seat a band is always missing. The fretting hand carries over from guitar, so a guitarist keeps up within a week, but the difficulty is elsewhere: you play one note at a time, nobody notices a wrong one, and a late one makes the whole song wobble. You need an amp, or all you get is a muted thud. Practise along with recordings; alone it teaches little.

First stepGet a starter bass and a small amp, play along to a recording of a song you like using only root notes, and stay locked to the beat all the way.
