Guqin

Seven strings, very quiet, and never really meant for an audience

Easily confused with the guzheng and almost its opposite: the guqin has seven strings and is quiet enough to be inaudible from the next room, historically played for oneself or one listener. Its notation records fingerings rather than pitches and has to be learned separately. Teachers are scarce, so most people start online.

First stepFind a guqin teacher or an online intro course, learn to read its tablature in the first lesson, and only then think about buying one.
