Kalimba

It sounds good on the first pluck, with almost nothing to learn first

There is almost no barrier: it arrives tuned, random plucking sounds pleasant, and it is one of the few instruments that feels finished in the first hour. The trade-off should be stated plainly — few notes, no accidentals, a limited repertoire and a visible ceiling. Good as a quiet thing to hold, not as a main instrument.

First stepBuy a 17-key kalimba and play one nursery rhyme all the way through from number notation.
