Sort edges and colours first; testing piece by piece never ends
The method is well established: pull out every edge piece and close the border first, then sort by colour and texture, which is several times faster than testing pieces individually. It needs a surface you can occupy for days, or a roll-up mat. A thousand pieces suits a first attempt, and difficulty comes from similar colours.
First stepClear a table you can leave for a few days, tip out a thousand-piece puzzle, sort the pieces into colour and texture piles, and build the most distinctive patch first.
