Write to a stranger for years, with weeks between each reply
Pick someone on a matching site, send a first letter, then wait: weeks each way is normal, and the slowness is the texture of the thing, which is why you write far more carefully than you would type. Postage and paper are the only costs. The part to accept is that people stop replying, and correspondences lasting years are the exception.
