Geology & Rockhounding

Read a road cut, and the rock will tell you a few hundred million years

A rock hammer and a hand lens is the kit. The best classrooms are road cuts and streambeds, where layers stack in order and reading the order means reading time. Sort igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic first and everything below that has a frame to hang on. Check local rules before collecting; protected land usually forbids it.

First stepTake a hand lens to a road cutting near you, tell one igneous rock from one sedimentary, and photograph the order of the layers.
