Model Railroading
Lay track, get a train running, then build the world around it
Scale comes first; HO and N are the common ones, and N fits roughly twice the layout into the same space. Space and money are the real constraints, though a door-sized board will keep you busy for years and there is no need to fill a room to begin. Three hobbies overlap here: track, wiring and control, and scenery, and scenery usually wins.
First stepChoose a scale, buy a starter oval set, lay it on a door-sized board, wire it, and run a full lap without a derailment.
