Railfanning
Wait at the lineside, where the spot you pick matters as much as the train
Unlike an airport, there is no timetable to consult: passenger services roughly keep time, but freight runs on local knowledge and a scanner, and going home empty-handed after an afternoon is routine. That makes the location half the hobby — a curve, a bridge, the approach to a signal — since the same train from a different spot is a different photograph. Older locomotives draw people for the sound alone.
First stepLook up the passenger timetable on one line, choose a curve or a bridge for your spot, and photograph two trains passing.
