Bug Watching

Crouch down and look; a back garden holds hundreds of species

No equipment at all; a phone held close is enough. Unlike birding this needs no distance — one flowerbed, or a lamp on a summer night, holds more species than you can name. It is easy enough for a child, and yet identifying to species turns hard fast, because many groups cannot be separated by outline alone.

First stepOn a summer evening, visit a lit wall or a flower bed, photograph ten different insects, and identify the group each of five belongs to.
