Open Water & Cold Swimming

No walls or lane ropes: temperature and direction are yours to judge

Outside a pool, temperature, currents and entry and exit points become part of the preparation. Cold water can affect breathing and swimming ability, so pool distances are a poor guide. Start with an instructor-led introduction, go with a buddy and check conditions before entering slowly. A bright tow float improves visibility; it does not replace rescue cover.

First stepBook an open-water introduction with an instructor and rescue cover. Check conditions, equipment and how to get out; seek specific guidance for cold swimming rather than aiming for a set number of minutes.
