Windsurfing

Standing on a board gripping the boom, you lean back and turn wind into speed

Unlike kitesurfing, the sail is fixed to the board and you stand holding the boom, so a gust can't drag you away and a calm lake is enough to learn on. Day one is mostly hauling the sail up from the water and falling in again, hard on arms and back. Schools rent wide, stable boards and small sails. Tacking is what gets you home.

First stepBook an intro windsurfing lesson on a calm lake with rented gear, and practise until you can pull the sail up, sail ten metres and turn back.
