Bouldering

No rope, four metres up, and a thick mat where you land

The defining difference is the absence of a rope, and therefore of a partner, which is why this is the version you can do alone whenever you like. Problems are only a few moves long but each move is harder than on a route, so failing dozens of times in a session is normal. Learn to land: bend, roll back, never catch yourself on a hand.

First stepBuy a day pass and rent shoes, practise falling onto the mat before anything else, then send three of the easiest problems.
