Alpine Skiing

Two skis, two independent feet, and a green run on day one

The learning curve runs opposite to snowboarding: one lesson and you can come down a green run, with the difficulty arriving later. Rent the gear at first; lift tickets and the drive are the real expense and outrun equipment over a season. Falls tend to twist knees, which is why binding release settings are worth getting right.

First stepRent skis and take a two-hour group lesson; the goal is to snowplough from the top of the beginner run to the bottom without falling.
