Embroidery

Stitch a picture into cloth, where the stitch itself makes the texture

A hoop, needles and a skein of floss is the start; trace a design onto the cloth and a small patch is done in an hour or two. Stitches are the substance — satin fills, backstitch draws lines, French knots dot — and the same design in different stitches reads completely differently. You can follow a chart or draw straight onto the fabric, with no grid to obey.

First stepHoop a scrap of cotton, trace a leaf, outline it in backstitch, fill it with satin stitch, and finish within an hour.
