Quilting

Piece the top, add the batting, then stitch all three layers as one

The top comes first, small pieces joined into a single face, then batting and a backing, and the three get quilted together as one layer. A machine will do it; by hand, a bed-sized quilt is a project of months. Fabric and batting are where the money goes, and a full-size top eats far more yardage than people expect.

First stepPiece nine squares into a small block, layer it with batting and backing, and quilt the three layers into one mug-rug.
