Needle Felting
Stab wool with a barbed needle until it holds a solid shape
A tuft of wool, one barbed needle and a foam pad is the entire kit, and a small animal takes an hour or two. Its virtue is being endlessly adjustable: add wool where it is too tight, keep stabbing where the shape is wrong, with none of clay's point of no return. The needle is very sharp, stabbed fingers are the standard accident, and a guard saves blood.
First stepGet a little wool roving, a felting needle and a foam pad, put on a finger guard, and poke a ball with two ears on it.
