Fly Tying

Feathers and thread wound onto a hook until it passes for an insect

Most fly anglers end up tying their own flies. A vise, a bobbin holder, scissors and a few feathers fit on a desk, and a simple pattern takes a quarter of an hour. Patterns imitate the insects hatching that season, and a small miss in size or colour gets refused, so it ties closely to watching bugs. Start with an easy nymph, wraps tight.

First stepGet a starter vise and materials kit, tie ten of the simplest nymph pattern from a tutorial, and flick each one to check it holds together.
