Sewing

Cut cloth to a pattern and sew it into something that actually fits

Do not start with a garment. A drawstring bag or a pillowcase finishes in an afternoon and still teaches you threading, a straight seam and how to finish an edge. The machine is the easy part; measuring and cutting decide the fit, and a crooked cut cannot be sewn straight afterwards. A basic machine, patterns and fabric are the real outlay.

First stepOn a basic sewing machine, make a drawstring bag: cut two rectangles, sew three straight seams and thread the cord through.
