Write a small tool that removes something you keep doing by hand
Unlike learning to program in the abstract, this starts from a real irritation: whatever you do by hand every week is the first assignment, so motivation does not run out. A first script is usually renaming files in bulk or tidying a downloads folder, a few dozen lines. The gains compound, though the trap is spending hours to save minutes.
