Tie-dye

Bind the cloth before it goes in the dye; whatever you tied stays pale

The pattern comes entirely from how you tie it: rubber bands, clips and stitched lines all block the dye, and you cannot see what you made until you unwrap it, which is most of the appeal. An old white shirt and one packet of dye fills an afternoon, tying to drying. Fix and rinse it afterwards, or two washes will take the colour out.

First stepTwist an old white T-shirt into a spiral with rubber bands, apply one dye kit, leave it overnight, then rinse and set the colour before unwrapping.
