Natural Dyeing

Boil colour out of onion skins, husks and leaves, then dye with it

Where tie-dye is about the binding, this is about where the colour comes from. You cook it yourself out of skins, husks and leaves, so the same plant gives you a different result in another season or another water supply. A mordant is what makes it bite into the fibre, and cotton takes it very differently from wool. The colours shift as they age, which is treated as the point.

First stepSimmer a pot of onion skins, mordant a piece of cotton with alum, and dye your first swatch yellow.
