Chinese Ink Painting

One stroke is final, and how much water is in the brush decides it

This is painting with a soft brush and black ink thinned with water, on paper that drinks it the instant it lands. A stroke is therefore final: nothing gets reworked or covered, which is stricter than any Western medium. Water in the brush governs the rest, a loaded brush blooming outward where a dry one leaves a broken streak.

First stepBuy one brush, a bottle of ink and a pack of xuan paper, and fill a sheet with bamboo leaves, each stroke running from wet to dry.
