What a character wants is what makes a plot able to move
What separates it from writing generally is structure: how scenes are ordered, when information is released, and what the characters want, because a character who wants nothing cannot drive a plot and that is the commonest way a draft dies. Write short stories first; one finished story teaches more than half a novel.
