Knifemaking

Grind a blade out of flat steel, then heat-treat it to set the hardness

Unlike forging, the usual way in is stock removal: buy flat steel and grind the shape out of it, with no fire involved. Heat treatment is the real gate, because quench and temper temperatures decide whether you have a working knife or a brittle bar, and it cannot be judged by feel. Belt grinders and quench setups generally live in a shared workshop.

First stepTake an intro class at a knifemaking workshop, grind a blade from a steel blank, and do the heat treatment with the instructor.
